Loc. 2 along Rock Hole Creek, Carolina slate belt, NC - Gibson et. al 1985 (Ediacaran of the United States)

Where: Stanly County, North Carolina (35.2° N, 80.4° W: paleocoordinates 58.1° S, 100.4° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Flat Swamp to Floyd Church Member (Cid (upper)/ Millingport (lower) Formation), Ediacaran (635.0 - 541.0 Ma)

• Fossils correlate with parts of the Precambrian Valdai Series of the Vendian System of the Soviet Union, the Nama Group of South-Wet Africa and the Pound Quartzite of South Australia. Stratigraphically, the fossils are not found in place. Regional strike suggests origins from the upper McManus Formation of Conley and Bain, (1965) or the synonymous upper Cid/Lower Millingport Formations of Stromquist and Sundelius (1969). NOTE: there are widespread implications of a possible 627 Ma age for Pteriditnium interval for a radiometrically dated age of 586 Ma for the top of the Uwharrie Formation, several hundred meters below the fossil interval.

Environment/lithology: transition zone or lower shoreface; lithified mudstone and lithified siltstone

• thin-bedded to finely laminated pelites and siltstones (weakly metamorphosed)

Collection methods: NOTE: It should be noted that the article contains inconsistencies with respect to the name Albemarle Group, labeled as Albemarle Formation in Figure 2, p. 388
