Rhynie Chert, Aberdeenshire, Scotland (Devonian to of the United Kingdom)

Where: Scotland, United Kingdom (57.0° N, 2.0° W: paleocoordinates 24.1° S, 1.0° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Dryden Shale Formation, Pragian to Pragian (410.8 - 393.3 Ma)

• Age determined by Richardson (1967) and Batten (radiometric dating)

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lithified, gray chert

• Trewin (1994) describes the depositional environment in full. Organisms were preserved thanks to silica-rich hot springs that occurred on a floodplain not far from a lake. Plants grew on a sandy substrate.
• Powell et al. 1991 describe a number of textures of chert beds: (vuggy to massive cherts; lenticular cherts; laminated cherts; nodular cherts and brecciated cherts). Massive to vuggy cherts are most commonly used for paleontological studies.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils, microfossils

Preservation: permineralized, original carbon, replaced with silica

Collection methods: core, quarrying, peel or thin section,

• Specimens have been collected by NUMEROUS workers and the results are published in NUMEROUS papers.
