Malanzán, Cuesta de la Herradura (Carboniferous of Argentina)

Where: La Rioja, Argentina (30.8° S, 66.6° W: paleocoordinates 52.0° S, 65.4° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: La Divisoria Member (Malanzán Formation), Bashkirian (323.2 - 315.2 Ma)

• Stated as Lower Namurian but later publications state that this site is likely upper Namurian or Namurian C based on palynology. Radiometric dating in Gulbranson et al. (2010) indicates a Bashkirian age.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; carbonaceous lithology not reported

• Paganzo basin; fault-controlled subsidence formed small half-grabens and pull-apart basins that subsided intermittently in a series of rapid spurts. Strongly resemble transtensional pull-apart basins of strike-slip zones.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: mold/impression

Collected by S. Archangelsky & R. Leguizamon; reposited in the MLP
