Rietoog, Driedoornvlagte pinnacle reef complex (Ediacaran of Namibia)

Also known as Reef 4124

Where: Namibia (23.9° S, 16.7° E: paleocoordinates 41.4° S, 179.2° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Omkyk Member (Zaris Formation), Ediacaran (635.0 - 541.0 Ma)

• An ash bed that immediately overlies the Omkyk Member has been dated as 548.8 +/- 1 My B.P.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: reef, buildup or bioherm; lithified limestone

• The reef complex is over 300 m thick and at least 7 km long. Bioherms individually form elliptical mounds that reach up to 20 m in diameter, 5 to 10 m

•in width, and 5 m in height. Bioherm cores were constructed by massive thrombolites, often with entrapped Namacalathus; the outer layers consist of stromatolites up to 0.75 m thick. Fissures are abundant and occur with a spacing of up to three per meter. Remaining void space is filled with large neomorphosed aragonitic botryoids up to 15 mm in radius.

Size class: macrofossils
