Quebrada de Santa Clara (Triassic of Argentina)

Where: Mendoza, Argentina (32.1° S, 69.0° W: paleocoordinates 41.7° S, 32.2° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Santa Clara Abajo Formation (Peñasco Group), Late/Upper Triassic (237.0 - 201.4 Ma)

• Quebrada de Santa Clara is the type locality of the Santa Clara Abajo Formation.

•López-Arbarello & Zavattieri (2008, p. 1048): The precise stratigraphic

•correlation between the horizons bearing Pseudobeaconia in both sequences [PotrerillosFormation in El Challoa region and Quebrada de Santa Clara of Santa Clara Abajo Fm.] should be further explored, but the genus is so far unknown from other strata. Thus, the occurrence of this genus in both formations strengthens the argument for their correlation.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial-lacustrine; lithified siliciclastic sediments

• López-Arbarello $ Zavattieri (2008, p.1029): [M]ore than 400 m of alternating greenish shales, siltstones, mudstones, light grey, fine sandstones, some stromatolitic limestone levels, and a few conglomerate lenses (Text-figs 4–5)[compose the Quebrada de Santa Clara outcrop].

•López-Arbarello $ Zavattieri (2008, p.1048): [T]he type section of the Santa Clara Abajo Formation [i.e. the Quebrada de Santa Clara] (Text-fig. 5) also represents a fluvial system in the lower part of the profile and deltaic and lacustrine facies associations in the upper part, followed upward by extensively developed paleosoils (Hauschke 1988). These transgressive deposits culminate with the deposition of thick, black, bituminous lacustrine shales (including the maximum flooding surface) of the Santa Clara Arriba Formation.

Size class: macrofossils

• López-Arbarello & Zavattieri (2008,p.1029-1030): A rich microflora, megafloral remains, conchostracans, and fish remains were found in this section (see Stipanicic 1983; Stipanicic et al. 2002).

Reposited in the MACN, MCZ
