Ramanagar (Miocene of India)

Where: Jammu and Kashmir, India (32.8° N, 75.4° E: paleocoordinates 27.8° N, 76.6° E)

When: Chinji Formation (Siwalik Group), Middle Miocene (16.0 - 11.6 Ma)

• Outcrop sections observed near Ramanagar Township.

•about 11 - 13 Ma = MN 6 or 7 + 8 according to Vasishat et al. 1978

•

•This formation is about 11.2 to 14.2 Ma in age (Barry et al., 2002).

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial; lithified, gray, green sandstone and mudstone

• Aranaceous units alternating with argillaceous units. Aranaceous units dominated by sandstones over siltstones: medium to coarse-grained, highly weathered, micaceous, moderately compact with high percentage of undigested rock particles. Dirty-green to gray.

•Argillaceous units are claystones with some shales: loose, and green to pink weathered.
