Yang Tsao Ti, Lufeng (lower) (Jurassic of China)

Where: Yunnan, China (25.2° N, 102.1° E: paleocoordinates 34.4° N, 104.7° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• hand sample-level geographic resolution

When: Shawan Member (Lufeng Formation), Hettangian (201.3 - 199.3 Ma)

• Lufeng Mesozoic Sediments divided into Lower and Upper Series. Units 1-4 in Lower Series, Units 5-8 in Upper Series.

•The Lufeng Formation has been divided into lower dark/dull purple beds (= Shawan Member) and upper dark/deep red beds (= Zhangjiawa Member). Luo & Wu (1994: In the Shadow of the Dinosaurs, pp. 251–270) argue on the basis of vertebrate biostratigraphy for a probable Sinemurian age for the Zhangjiawa Member and a Hettangian age for the Shawan Member.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; poorly lithified, concretionary, green, red, blue, calcareous claystone

• First fossiliferrous beds occur 200 m abovebase of unit 2. Morganucodon found in this bed.
• "They are a somewhat compacted red clay with purplish and light blue-green streaks and contain many calcareous nodules"

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils
