Joffre Road ravine (Site 3) (Paleocene of Canada)

Where: Alberta, Canada (52.3° N, 113.7° W: paleocoordinates 58.7° N, 90.7° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Paskapoo Formation, Tiffanian (61.7 - 56.8 Ma)

• "The fossiliferous layer, ranging in thickness from 5 to 10 cm, is a fine-grained argillaceous limestone of I part hydromica to 2 parts calcite, It overlies a coal seam of varied thickness." Mitchell & Wighton, 1979

Environment/lithology: pond; lithified, fine-grained, argillaceous limestone

• Unlike many lacustrine sediments, the matrix shows no laminations, Hickey and Peterson (1978) suggest the Blackfalds site was once a forested backswamp; the absence of fish remains and the presence of mollusc shells (predominantly Physa spp,) and a few water lilies support this suggestion
• fine-grained matrix

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Preservation: mold/impression, adpression

Collection methods: Repository: University of Alberta Paleontological Collections (UAPC)
