• From Peppers 1970 page 35, "The Colchester (No. 2) Coal is the basal member of the Carbondale Formation of Illinois (Kosanke et. al, 1960, .34). It is the most widedspread coal in the Illinois Basin and probably is not only the most widely traceable but also one of the most economically important coals in North America. In Illinois it attains its maximum thickness of about 4 feet in the western and northern part of the state, where it is extensivly mined."
