• "...is preserved on a piece of carbonaceous shale picked up near Pittston, Penn., in a pile of culm, and is considered by him as doubtless coming from the roof shales of the D seam of anthracite (of Prof. Lesley's classification). Middle carboniferous." Scudder, 1879. Vein D (or "upper Ross Coal") is in the base of the Llewellyn Formation, of Westphalian D age (Edmunds et al., 1979).
