Early Pennsylvanian Fossils from Ely Limestone San Francisco Mnts, Western Utah (Carboniferous of the United States)

Where: Utah (38.5° N, 113.3° W: paleocoordinates 3.3° S, 49.0° W)

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Mississippian (358.9 - 323.2 Ma)

• The Ely Limestone is overlain unconformably by Tertiary volcanic rocks and is overthrust by a small sliver of Mississipian rocks north of the highway.

Environment/lithology: limestone and pebbly, conglomeratic dolomite

• This section most closely resembles the Pennsylvanian Ely Limestone of Nevada.
• The Ely Limestone is chiefly limestone and secondary dolomite, with interbedded quartzite and chert-pebble conglomerate. On the south side of the highway, the lower part of the section is gray, medium-bedded dolomite with nodular chert. There is a 20-30 foot section that contains a 1-4 foot ledge of fossiliferous chert-pebble conglomerate. Above this, is a fossiliferous, light gray, thin to medium bedded dolomite which weathers dark brown. In places, the bedding is almost laminated with with white chert layers. This is overlain by a thrust zone, followed by a light gray, finely crystalline, cherty, fossiliferous, massive-weathering limestone. The quartzite is absent in the section on the south side of the highway. The north side of the highway contains all of that previously described, but above the dolomites is a dark brown very well-indurated massive-bedded quartzite. The quartzite is followed by a gray, finely crystalline, medium-to thick-bedded fossiliferous limestone.
