Long Lake (Cretaceous of the United States)

Also known as Compsemys victa type

Where: North Dakota (46.7° N, 100.3° W: paleocoordinates 52.2° N, 73.2° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Hell Creek Formation (Montana Group), Late/Upper Maastrichtian (70.6 - 66.0 Ma)

• Probable Laramie age (Hay, 1908, p. 233). As noted by Gaffney (1972) this horizon is most likely late Cretaceous. The shallow water marine Fox Hills Formation and the overlying Hell Creek Formation are exposed around Long Lake (Bluemle, 1977). Given that there are only a few vertebrate fossils known from the Fox Fills Formation and that the holotype is preserved much like fossils from the Hell Creek Formation, we are confident in constraining the provenance of this fossil to the Hell Creek Formation.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; lithology not reported

Size class: macrofossils

Reposited in the USNM
