• Stratigraphically above the Ilmenau Formation, which was recently dated 299.3 ± 0.3 Ma by U-Pb CA-ID-TIMS (Lützner et al. 2021). Asselian according to Voigt et al. (2022).

Environment/lithology: fluvial-lacustrine; shale

• Thuringian Forest basin; extensional basin with dextral strike-slip transtension component following the Variscan orogeny. After a relief reactivation, red-brown alluvial fan conglomerates and fluvial sandstones grade into brownish to greenish fluvio-lacustrine and very finely laminated (varved) black shales of the depocentres intercalated by basin-wide tuff marker-beds."
