Also known as Mons Basin
Where: Hainaut, Belgium (50.4° N, 3.8° E: paleocoordinates 43.8° N, 2.1° E)
• coordinate estimated from map
• outcrop-level geographic resolution
When: Hainin Formation, Danian (66.0 - 61.6 Ma)
• Reference-level MP1-5 of the mammalian biochronological scale for the European Palaeogene.
•
•Although not precisely dated, has been correlated with the earliest Selandian based on stratigraphy (Steurbaut 1998), and more recently to the latest Danian (Steurbaut & Sztrakos 2008).
•
•The borehole that yielded the fossils encountered continental deposits between 8.50 m and 38.52 m in depth. Of the 30 m of continental deposits, only the section between 11 and 25 m yielded vertebrates (De Bast and Smith 2016).
• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution
Environment/lithology: lacustrine; claystone
Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils
Collected by Geological laboratory of the Faculté Polytechnique de Mons in the 1970s
Collection methods: core, chemical
• The sediments collected from the Hainin well went through a first step of screen washing. The remaining hard parts were treated with formic acid (5%) with tricalcic phosphate (Ca3(PO4)2) used as a buffer. A second step of screenwashing was then performed.
