Chinchilla Riffle Range (Pliocene of Australia)

Also known as Darling Downs

Where: Queensland, Australia (26.8° S, 150.6° E: paleocoordinates 29.4° S, 150.2° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Chinchilla Sand Formation, Early/Lower Pliocene (5.3 - 3.6 Ma)

• Although no direct dates have been obtained for this deposit, biocorrelation suggests the deposit is early to middle Pliocene (Tedford et al. 1992, Mackness et al. 2000).

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: alluvial fan; lithified, ferruginous, quartzose, calcareous sandstone and poorly lithified, silty, sandy claystone

• The Chinchilla Sand includes well-lithified calcareous sandstones grading into siltstone and conglomerate (quartz and ferruginous sandstone), and weakly consolidated sands that grade into silt and sandy clay. Such sediments were derived from erosion of the Orallo Formation and its lateritized profiles (Bartholomai & Woods, 1976).

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Collection methods: Silvaroo bila were collected by Ces and Doris Wilkinson

Purpose of describing collection: general faunal/floral analysis

PaleoDB collection 13318: authorized by John Hunter, entered by John Hunter on 20.02.2002, edited by Mark Uhen, Albert Garcia Selles, Philip Mannion and Grace Varnham
