Tuştea-Oltoane nesting site (Cretaceous of Romania)

Also known as Valioara; Tuştea Oltoane; Tuştea nesting site; Vălioara; Valiora; Tustea, Ultoane

Where: Hunedoara, Romania (45.6° N, 22.8° E: paleocoordinates 32.7° N, 21.0° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Middle Member (Densuş-Ciula Formation), Early/Lower Maastrichtian (70.6 - 66.0 Ma)

• Close to the base of the Densuș-Ciula succession, in the basal part of the ‘middle member’, and are thus most probably of earliest to early Maastrichtian in age (Csiki-Sava et al., 2016). This age assessment is congruent with the 71.3+/-1.6 Ma K-Ar radiometric age reported by Bojar et al. (2011) from a tuff layer situated slightly to the west (Botfalvai et al. 2021)

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: dry floodplain; paleosol/pedogenic, concretionary, micaceous, volcaniclastic, red, silty, calcareous claystone and burrowed, ferruginous marl

• Oxidized well-drained floodplain deposits developed within the distal part of an alluvial plain
• "an 0.5-m-thick layer of red, silty, clay that has since been found to contain fine volcanic ash and is sandwiched between iron-rich marls, with thin calcrete nodules and tubular burrows beneath. An erosional surface above the clay bed is topped by a thick bed of conglomerate of epi- and volcaniclastic sediments in a tufitic matrix." Bed is mica-rich and contains calcrete concretions.

Size class: macrofossils
