Mississippian Fossils, Illipah Formation, Northern Needle Range (Carboniferous to of the United States)

Where: Millard County, Utah (38.7° N, 114.0° W: paleocoordinates 1.9° S, 48.8° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Illipah Formation, Carboniferous to Carboniferous (358.9 - 323.2 Ma)

• The contact with the underlying Chainman Shale is places at the base of the red weathering limestones. The top of the brown crinoidal limestones, or whenever exposed, the top of the red-maroon sandstones form the contact with the overlying Pennsylvanian Ely Limestone

Environment/lithology: shelly/skeletal, black, yellow, sandy limestone

• The writer has divided the formation into three units. The lower unit consists of thin bedded, black, sandy-limestone. The most outstanding feature of this formation, especially the lower unit, is the brick red and yellow ochre colors of the weathered limestones. Upward in the section, the limestones become medium bedded, form step ledges and slopes, and weather medium grey. The upper most unit consists of medium bedded crinoidal limestones which weather yellow-brown to brown. Throughout the upper unit partially silicified fossils are abundant and tend to weather free. Red and maron sandstones and quartzites are commonly exposed above the crinoidal limestones. The sands consist of quartz grains, sub-rounded to rounded, medium to coarse in size.
