Griesbeckerzell 1b (Miocene of Germany)

Where: Bavaria, Germany (48.4° N, 11.0° E: paleocoordinates 48.7° N, 9.7° E)

• coordinate stated in text

When: OSM E mammal zone, Fluviatile Untere Serie Member (Upper Freshwater Molasse Formation), Langhian (16.0 - 13.8 Ma)

• Sand horizon of Unterneul sedimentary unit (acc. to Fiest, 1989) of the Fluviatile Untere Serie, Middle part of the Upper Freshwater Molasse (OSM), Early Badenian (Langhian).

•"Biostratigraphically the [...] fossil layer belongs to the regional unit OSM E that is characterized by the cricetids Megacricetodon lappi (Mein, 1958) and Cricetodon meini Freudenthal, 1963 (Abdul Aziz et al. 2008, 2010; Prieto et al. 2009), which is also confirmed by the occurrence of jaw fragments of Cricetodon aff. meini in Griesbeckerzell 1b. [...] the sediments of the unit OSM E correlate to chron C5Bn.1r (Abdul Aziz et al. 2008), thus suggesting an age of between 15.0 and 14.9 Ma for Griesbeckerzell 1b [...]" (Ivanov & Böhme, 2011).

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fine channel fill; poorly lithified, fine-grained sandstone

• "fine-grained sands" (Ivanov & Böhme, 2011).

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Reposited in the BSP
