Kolob Canyons (Triassic of the United States)

Where: Washington County, Utah (37.4° N, 113.1° W: paleocoordinates 8.1° N, 38.9° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: lower red Member (Moenkopi Formation), Smithian (251.3 - 247.2 Ma)

• The lower red member is a lateral equivalent of the lower part of the Torrey Member of the Moenkopi Formation (Mickelson et al. 2006: table 1).

•"In SE Utah, the Torrey Member immediately overlies the Sinbad Limestone, a marine unit that yields Smithian ammonoids...The Virgin Limestone, of early Spathian age, may correlate to the uppermost part of the Torrey Member. Therefore we regard the Torrey as primarily of Smithian age" (Lucas & Schoch 2002: Lethaia 35: 97–106)

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; gray shale and fine-grained sandstone

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: trace
