• Mörnsheim Formation (Lower Tithonian)

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; muddy, cherty/siliceous limestone

• The specimen was found in the middle parts of the Moernsheim Formation exposed at Mühlheim (Fig. 1), in a section of platy, siliceous limestones overlying lime bank B-H-5 ("Krebs-Bank"). The marine Tithonian (Upper Jurassic) Moernsheim Formation covers the famous Solnhofen lithographic limestones in the western region of the Franconian Alb in northern Bavaria. In contrast to the underlying Solnhofen Formation, the sediments of the Moernsheim Formation are more heterogeneous, consisting of mainly siliceous limestones in alternate bedding with marly and limey sections, and with intercalated banks particularly in the lower parts of the formation.
