Victoria Fossil Cave, Grant Hall (Pleistocene to of Australia)

Also known as White Chamber, Victoria Cave, 5U1; Naracoorte Caves World Heritage Area

Where: South Australia, Australia (37.0° S, 140.8° E: paleocoordinates 37.0° S, 140.8° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Middle Pleistocene to Middle Pleistocene (0.8 - 0.0 Ma)

• The absolute age is said to have been obtained from “several levels of speleothems” associated with the fossiliferous deposits by means of “Uranium series” (Reed & Bourne, 2000) without any further specification of the decay product.

Environment/lithology: cave; poorly lithified siltstone

• not cited but lithology is probably very similar to that of the sediment in the Main Chamber of the cave (see coll. no. 28364).

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Collected by CEGSA, SAM, FU

• material is housed in the Flinders University, Adelaide, vertebrate paleontology collection

Taxonomic list

• Technical note: The taxonomic list originally only contained sthenurine kangaroo taxa from the monography of Prideaux (2004). These occurences have been transferred to PBDB coll. no 28364 due to redundance. Prideaux (2004) does not differentiate between sublocalities in the cave and the type locality of Simosthenurus maddocki very likely is the main chamber. Also, Reed & Bourne (2000) cite the same kangaroo taxa for the main chamber as Prideaux (2004) does for the whole(?) Victoria Fossil Cave. The kangaroo occurences now listed here are based on Reed & Bourne (2000).
