UCMP V6995 (Quaternary of Peru)

Also known as Caranja River

Where: Ucayali, Peru (10.1° S, 71.3° W: paleocoordinates 10.1° S, 71.1° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Quaternary (2.6 - 0.0 Ma)

• Probably Quaternary representatives of modern species (Gasparini et al. 2021), rather than late Miocene species, as originally proposed by Frailey and Campbell (2012), who had previously written:

•Although no stratigraphic data are available for these localities, the fact that sites VF2, VF3, and VF56 were collected in November and January (as per specimen labels; Willard, 1966), during the rainy season in that part of Amazonia, precludes the possibility that the fossils came from riverine lag deposits exposed only during the dry season. The fossils collected on these dates were probably taken directly from the fossiliferous Acre Conglomerate (see below; Campbell et al., 1985, 2006), upon which riverine beaches often form at high water levels. Additional localities include an outcrop on a small tributary of the Caranja River near Balta, Departemento de Ucayali, Peru (UCMP Locality V6995), where James Patton collected a single specimen in 1968, and an outcrop on the Jurua River, Brazil.

•Campbell et al., 2001: Acre conglomerate of Madre de Dios fm = 9.01Ma

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial; lithified, black conglomerate

Size class: macrofossils

Collected by J. Patton in 1968
