Bicaz Gorges, SU II Member (Cretaceous of Romania)

Where: Bicaz Gorges, Romania (47.0° N, 25.9° E: paleocoordinates 26.7° N, 30.1° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Lapos Formation, Late/Upper Berriasian (145.0 - 140.2 Ma)

• Late Berriasian.

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; mudstone

• During the Berriasian and early Valanginian, algal nodules varying in size are a remarkable presence between two levels of hardground.
• The member contains micrites showing basal breccias and hardgrounds with cyanophyceean borings. The base displays hardground crossed by borings, overlain by ferruginous crusts, followed by graysh micrites and subordinate pelsparites, suggesting a regressive trend for the sequence. The basal breccias originating from desiccation are made up of micritic intraclasts cemented with sparite-ferrouginous "melt". The basal hardground is interpreted as a marker for the early Berriasian - late Berriasian boundary.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils
