When: Helez Formation (Kurnub Group), Valanginian to Valanginian (139.8 - 129.4 Ma)

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified sandstone and lithified, ferruginous, carbonaceous shale

• The sediments of the Kurnub Group consist of shallow marine to continental sandstones, carbonaceous shales, sandy and ferruginous limestones, and marls. The lowest formation, the Zeweira, is the most arenaceous unit and includes the carbonaceous shales and lignitic layers that yielded the spores and pollen used in this study. The middle part of the Zeweira Formation contains the lowest marine intercalations
