GPSW-7 WELL, Sample 22 (Cretaceous of Egypt)

Where: north Western Desert, Egypt (30.0° N, 28.0° E: paleocoordinates 11.7° N, 23.2° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Ephedripites ambiguus-Ephedripites multicostatus-Foveotricolpites giganteus- Foveotricolpites gigantoreticulatus pollen zone, E Member (Abu Roash Formation), Early/Lower Turonian (93.5 - 89.3 Ma)

Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; lithified, gray, calcareous limestone and lithified, black, calcareous shale

• A return to the shallow marine depositional conditions of the previous phase that culminated in the Abu Roash G Member marked the advent of the Turonian Abu Roash E and D Members (GPC, 1994). This is supported palynologically by the onset of a very high terrestrial/fresh-water influx (Fig. 5A, B), based on the presence of brackish/fresh-water algal bodies Botryococcus and Pediastrum deposited in a proximal shelf.

Size class: microfossils

Preservation: soft parts, original sporopollenin

Collection methods: core, chemical
