Zelkovice Formation, shale facies, non-graptolite faunal elements (Silurian of Czech Republic)

Where: Czech Republic (50.1° N, 14.5° E: paleocoordinates 59.9° S, 66.0° E)

• coordinate based on political unit

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Zelkovice Formation, Llandovery (443.4 - 433.4 Ma)

• Rhuddanian, Aeronian, and basal Telychian sediments included in this formation.

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; black, gray, green, argillaceous, silty, cherty/siliceous shale and siltstone

• "The vertical development of sedimentation relates to continuing transgression. The dark grey clayey shales with a variable silty admixture represent the A. ascensus Biozone [i.e. lowest in the Rhuddanian] in all parts of the basin. After an abrupt change in sedimentation during the lower parts of the A. acuminatus Biozone, laminites occur...The laminites are overlain generally by siltstones or silty shales with siliceous shales and silicites forming higher parts of the sequence..[higher up, facial diversity reduced and siliceous shales widespread, but there are also black clayey shales with green shale intercalations in parts of the basin]....Mention should be made of the very high organic carbon content in the sediments...Abiotic conditions within the bottom layers confirmed by extremely rare occurrence of benthic forms..."

Collection methods: Elements mentioned on p. 12 of Kriz (1992).
