Meinerzhagener Korallenkalk, Kierspe (Devonian of Germany)

Where: Germany (51.1° N, 7.6° E: paleocoordinates 23.7° S, 8.1° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Cultrijugatus Beds zone, Eifelian (393.3 - 387.7 Ma)

• Lower Eifelian; upper Cultrijugatus Beds, equivalent to the Hohenhof Formation of northern Sauerland.

Environment/lithology: reef, buildup or bioherm; green, yellow shale

• The coral fauna comprises five tabulate corals and one rugose coral that document a paleobiogeographic relationship between Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The associated fauna is represented by brachiopods, ostracods, and echinoderms. The studied limestones also commonly contain calcimicrobes represented by three species. The faunal and microfacial

•characteristics indicate a shallow marine depositional environment just above the storm wave base, with a supposed depth of 20m,within the photic zone.

• greenish-yellowish shales. Limestones are represented by coral-bryozoan

•bafflestones, algal-bryozoan bindstones, and locally by pure bryozoan bindstones. Bryozoan bindstones are produced by encrusting cystoporates.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils, microfossils

Collection methods: All investigated material was collected in the quarry during excavating a new access to the Hülloch, a locally famous cave (Marks 2010).
