Well Azx-1, Muglad Basin, Sample Az-12 (Cretaceous to of Sudan)

Where: South Kurdufan, Sudan (11.0° N, 27.7° E: paleocoordinates 10.2° S, 17.8° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

When: Zone III (Apt.-Alb.) pollen zone, Bentiu Formation, Aptian to Aptian (125.0 - 100.5 Ma)

• Reference section. Azx-1, depth 1580 m (sample Az

•04).

•Definition. The top of this zone is marked by the last

•occurrence of Crybelosporites cf. pannuceus and the

•occurrence of abundant Classopollis spp., Ephedripites

•jansonii, Ephedripites cf. multicostatus and Araucariacites

•australis.

•Suggested age. Albian–Cenomanian.

•Discussion. The African range of Crybelosporites pannuceus

•is restricted to the Albian and Cenomanian (Lawal

•and Moullade 1986; Awad 1994; Schrank and Ibrahim

•1995; Schrank and Mahmoud 1998) and from the same

•interval in northern South America (e.g. Brenner 1968;

•Regali et al. 1974). The occurrence of Ephedripites

•jansonii within the Albian/Cenomanian interval is

•evident, e.g. in Sudan (Awad 1994; Eisawi et al. 2009),

•in Brazil (Traverse 1988) and in Nigeria (Lawal and

•Moullade 1986). Classopollis spp. and Araucariacites

•australis are common in this interval

Environment/lithology: fluvial-lacustrine; lithified sandstone

• The successions in several deep wells in the Muglad Basin consist of thick Lower Cretaceous to Paleogene–Neogene strata of claystones, fluvio-lacustrine sandstones and siltstones (Schull 1988). Based on seismic and log interpretations, twelve formations are distinguished in the Muglad Basin of which thick beds of shales and claystones interbedded with fine sandstones and siltstones constitute the Abu Gabra Formation (Neocomian–Aptian), the main source rock in the Muglad Basin. The reservoir rock is the thick sandstone sequence of the Bentiu Formation (Aptian–Cenomanian).

Size class: microfossils
