Fu3a, Furlo Pass (Grilli Quarry) (Jurassic of Italy)

Where: Italy (43.6° N, 12.7° E: paleocoordinates 30.0° N, 18.3° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Jamesoni (189.6 - 183.0 Ma)

• Belong to the lithostratigraphic unit called "Corniola." Miltoceras Mediterranean zone, probably the basal part, correlated with Polymorphus subzone of Jamesoni zone.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: slope; lithified floatstone

• Their facies is characteristic of reduced or condensed successions (ramp or Calcare Massiccio sensu lato facies, sometimes referred as “Corniola massiccia”, i.e. “massive Corniola”), without regular stratification and sometimes encrinitic. Fossils occur in a very localized area, and they are restricted to sublenticular bodies, where very often the material looks fragmented (but never reworked), without evident sorting or orientation. The features of these lumachellas seem indicative of sedimentation by discontinuous episodic inputs, originated as markedly canalized gravitative deposits (debrites). In all probability, the material constituting these debrites came from a more elevated portion of the sea-bottom, and, after rather short transport, it was deposited in a slope environment without the contribution of waves or currents.
• Bioclasts (for the most part ammonites) appear to float in an abundant matrix,

•which is almost always recrystallized, and show internal cavities frequently filled by druse cements, but without evident geopetal structures.
