Sobradinho section / SOB-8 (Cretaceous of Brazil)

Where: CearĂ¡, Brazil (7.5° S, 39.1° W: paleocoordinates 8.9° S, 7.4° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Santana Group, Late/Upper Aptian (122.5 - 113.0 Ma)

• From Melo et al. 2020: In summary, this integrated study of foraminifera, ostracodes and other microfossil data from the Romualdo Formation indicates that the local Alagoas Stage (Ostracoda Zone RT-011) can now be constrained to the Aptian. Arai and Assine 2020 also support that the Romualdo Formation and Santana Group is entirely Aptian in age.

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, sandy sandstone and lithified, argillaceous shale

• The section starts with cross-bedded sand- and siltstones intercalated with grey and greenish mudstones, which pass upward into a thick sequence of organic-rich shales.

Size class: microfossils

• Other: Palynomorphs

Preservation: soft parts, original sporopollenin

Collection methods: bulk, chemical, hydrochloric, hydroflouric,
