Farola Monte Hermoso FM Facies (Pliocene of Argentina)

Also known as Hermosense Tipico FM Facies

Where: Buenos Aires, Argentina (39.0° S, 61.7° W: paleocoordinates 39.1° S, 60.3° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Montehermosan mammal zone, Monte Hermoso Formation, Montehermosan (5.0 - 3.8 Ma)

• The overbank deposits display a wide lateral extension in the

•abrasion platform and the lower part of the cliff; and include the Fl

•and Fm facies. These levels are equivalent to the “Hermosense

•típico” of Vignati (1925) and Bonaparte (1960), the “Unidad A” of

•Fidalgo et al. (1975), and “Unidad Litoestratigráfica I” of Fidalgo and

•Tonni (1982)

Environment/lithology: fluvial; brown, red breccia

• The Fm facies includes matrix-supported breccias, with variable

•colors between dark brown and reddish brown. They are composed

•of silty and sandy intraclasts, some of them rounded, without selection

•and chaotically distributed in a muddy matrix. These

•deposits overlie the Fl facies at an erosion surface, generally show a

•massive structure, although in some cases a fine lamination could

•be barely distinguished

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Preservation: trace

Collection methods: All the materials are housed in the Museo

•Municipal de Ciencias Naturales “Carlos Darwin” (Punta Alta,

•Buenos Aires), under the acronym MD-FM.
