Hrútagil (Mókollsdalur) (Miocene of Iceland)

Where: Iceland (65.5° N, 21.5° W: paleocoordinates 65.5° N, 21.5° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Skarðsströnd–Mókollsdalur Formation, Tortonian (11.6 - 7.2 Ma)

• The fossil insects are found ca. 50 m below the top of the succession, in a 40–80 cm thick unit composed mostly of alternating fine to coarse ash layers. The age of these sedimentary rocks is between 9 and 8 Ma.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: crater lake; lithified, diatomaceous tuff

• The sedimentary rocks at Hrútagil apparently accumulated in a large caldera lake and are over 120 m thick.
• The insects are preserved in the finest ash layers. These layers have a minor component of fine clastic material and diatom remains.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: adpression

Collection methods: Repository: Icelandic Institute (Museum) of Natural History (IMNH)
