Körborn (Permian of Germany)

Where: Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany (49.6° N, 7.4° E: paleocoordinates 3.1° N, 18.5° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Odernheim Member (Meisenheim Formation), Asselian (298.9 - 295.5 Ma)

• Stratigraphically, this lake horizon is situated at the top of the Meisenheim Formation (= top of the Odernheim Subformation), which is part of the Glan Subgroup within the Rotliegend Group (= Lower Dyas Group). One important tuff marker horizon, the Pappelberg Tuff, which is slightly older than the Humberg lake sediments, has yielded a 206Pb/238U age of 297.0 ± 3.2 Ma.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lacustrine; lithified shale

• Poschmann & Schindler (2004) interpreted the host sediment at this locality as representing lake stage IV of the so-called Humberg Bed. Saar-Nahe basin; Half-graben generated by extension on South Hunsruck bounding fault, but with some component of dextral strike-slip transtension in an intermontane setting following the Variscan orogeny.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Preservation: mold/impression
