STRI Loc. 290685 - Patajau [lower Castilletes Fm] (Miocene of Colombia)

Also known as STRI Sample 37854

Where: La Guajira, Colombia (11.9° N, 71.4° W: paleocoordinates 11.2° N, 68.1° W)

• coordinate based on unpublished field data

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: lower Castilletes Member (Castilletes Formation), Burdigalian (20.4 - 16.0 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Castilletes Formation, which conformably overlies the Jimol Formation (early Miocene) and is unconformably overlain by the Ware Formation. This area and nearby collections have been previously mapped as Castilletes Formaton (late Pliocene-early Pleistocene). AGE: Burdigalian, on the basis of macrofaunal composition; direct age established by extrapolation of Sr-isotope dating by enterer. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From very base of Castilletes Formation, in lower member; lensoidal coquina; from approximately 60 m above Jimol/Castilletes contact.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; unlithified, shelly/skeletal siltstone

• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Unconsolidated, shelly, silty matrix. LITHIFICATION: Unlithified, as determined in the field and based on museum-reposited specimens.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Preservation: original aragonite, original calcite

Collected by Hendy in 2013

Collection methods: surface (float), surface (in situ),

• COLLECTOR: A. Hendy, 01/26/2013. REPOSITORY: Presently reposited at Universidad del Norte, Colombia; also based on field observations.
