• Shaw (2014): "Located between the Lenoir and Athens formations, the upper part of these beds contains the stratigraphically important Pygodus serrus–Pygodus anserinus conodont zonal boundary (late Darriwilian) (Sweet and Bergström, 1962; Bergström, 1990). Finney (1984) and Bergström (1990) showed that the base of the Nemagraptus gracilis Zone (early Sandbian) lies in the Athens Formation just above the Pratt Ferry beds."
