UCMP 7016, Simi Valley, Santa Susana (Paleocene of the United States)

Where: Ventura County, California (34.3° N, 118.7° W: paleocoordinates 38.0° N, 99.2° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

When: Santa Susana Formation, Thanetian (59.2 - 56.0 Ma)

• Originally described as "Martinez," but now belongs to Santa Susana Formation. Nautilids come from Zinsmeister's (1983) "assemblage A" which spans the lower three-quarters of the Santa Susana. Planktonic foraminifera suggest a P4 and P5 age (Heitman, 1983) and calcareous nannoplankton belong to zones CP5-CP8 (Filewicz & Hill, 1983), indicating a Thanetian age.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; siliciclastic sediments

• Without precise locality information, the environment is uncertain. The Santa Susana Formation ranges from bathyal slope and submarine fan environments to offshore and offshore-transition shelf environments.

Size class: macrofossils
