Cerro Guandacol, Quebrada de las Libélulas (Carboniferous of Argentina)

Where: Argentina (29.5° S, 68.5° W: paleocoordinates 50.3° S, 65.6° W)

When: Guandacol Formation, Arnsbergian (326.4 - 318.1 Ma)

• Basal part of the Guandacol Formation (in the earlier sense, not including the Aguas Blanquitas that may be considered as the basal member). Middle part of formation dated as earliest Bashkirian (c. 320-321 Ma from U/Pb ages), and lower part dated at 326 Ma (Valdez et al. 2020), suggesting a Serpukhovian age for the insects.

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, black claystone

• Interpreted as lacustrine environment but presence of brachiopods indicates that it is actually marine
