Where: Thüringer Wald, Germany (50.7° N, 10.8° E: paleocoordinates 4.7° N, 20.3° E)
• coordinate based on nearby landmark
• outcrop-level geographic resolution
When: Goldlauter Formation, Asselian (298.9 - 295.5 Ma)
• Untere Goldlauterer Schichten, Acanthodeshorizont, Unterrotliegendes. Lower Acanthodes Lake Horizon. Both localities belong to the Sysciophlebia balteata-Spiloblattina homigtalensis insect zone and the Apateon flagrifer flagrifer-Branchierpeton reinholdi-Melanerpeton eisfeldi amphibian zone. Each of these is correlated on the basis of insect co-occurrences with marine zone-species as well by radioisotopic ages with the early Asselian (Schneider et al., 2020) of the Global Standard Chronostratigraphic Scale.
Environment/lithology: lacustrine - large; lithified, black shale
•Thuringian Forest basin; extensional basin with dextral strike-slip transtension component following the Variscan orogeny. After a relief reactivation, red-brown alluvial fan conglomerates and fluvial sandstones grade into brownish to greenish fluvio-lacustrine and very finely laminated (varved) black shales of the depocentres intercalated by basin-wide tuff marker-beds."
