Ziegler Reservoir, Locality 49, Unit 16 (Pleistocene of the United States)

Where: Pitkin County, Colorado (39.2° N, 107.0° W: paleocoordinates 39.2° N, 107.0° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Late/Upper Pleistocene (0.1 - 0.0 Ma)

• Late MIS 5a, dated by OSL.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: pond; unlithified peat

Size class: macrofossils

Collected in 2010-2011; reposited in the DMNH

Collection methods: chemical

• Boiled in a dilute solution of sodiumhexametaphosphate, a dispersant. Most samples disaggregated in this procedure, but a few contained highly felted peats that were subsequently treated in cold, 7% KOH solution to aid disaggregation. The organic fraction of each sample was then wet sieved on a 300 μm screen, and insect fossils were isolated from plant residues by the kerosene flotation method.
