Van Rooyenskraal farm (Permian to of South Africa)

Where: Eastern Cape, South Africa (33.0° S, 23.8° E: paleocoordinates 61.2° S, 35.2° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Eodicynodon or Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zone other zone, Koonap Formation (Beaufort Group), Wordian to Wordian (266.9 - 259.5 Ma)

• This specimen was collected 450–500 m above the base of the Koonap Formation, just above the first purple mudstone in the formation. This is stratigraphically quite low and correlation to the west suggests that this could be within the Eodicynodon Assemblage Zone. However, this locality lies 140 km east of the other Brachyprosopus localities, within the Koonap Formation, which was deposited by a different fluvial transport system. Correlation between the Van Rooyenskraal locality and the stratigraphic framework used further west is further complicated by folding along the southern margin of the basin, but it most likely corresponds to somewhere between the uppermost Eodicynodon Assemblage Zone and the lowermost Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zone.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; siliciclastic sediments

Size class: macrofossils
