Where: Japan (35.4° N, 133.1° E: paleocoordinates 37.7° N, 130.5° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Fujina Formation, Serravallian (13.8 - 11.6 Ma)

• Based on planktonic foraminifera, the upper member of the Fujina (=Huzina) Formation is assigned to N10-11 of Blow's zones (14.6/14.8-12.4 Ma) (Nomura & Maiya, 1984). Age constrained to N11 planktonic foraminifera zone by Yanagisawa (1990). Base of overlying Matsue Formation dated around 11.5-11.9 Ma by Shikano & Nagano (1985).

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; lithified, glauconitic, gray, green sandstone

• Lower part of Huzina (=Fujina) formation deposited in outer neritic zone (50-200 m depth) on the basis of benthic foraminifera (Tai, 1955).
• Firm, greenish-grey sandstone. Dark gray glauconitic sandstone according to Kobayashi (1960).
