Crinoid ossicles from Mariaholmen (Triassic to of Norway)

Where: Svalbard, Norway (77.7° N, 14.9° E: paleocoordinates 41.0° N, 9.4° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Vardebukta and Tillingodden Formation, Induan to Induan (252.2 - 247.2 Ma)

Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; packstone

• About 90 meters of the lowermost part of the Vardebukta Formation is covered by Quaternary deposits. The upper part of the Vardebukta Formation consists of shallow−marine (including pro−delta) sediments. The overlying Tvillingodden Formation is characterized by a transgressive system tract in the lower part and a regressive system tract in the upper part. Abundant silicified crinoid ossicles were recovered from eight samples taken from a highly fossiliferous limestone (the Skilisen Bed).

Size class: mesofossils

Preservation: original calcite, replaced with silica
