Sümeg (Eocene to of Hungary)

Where: Hungary (47.0° N, 17.3° E: paleocoordinates 40.9° N, 15.1° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Szoc Limestone Formation, Lutetian to Lutetian (47.8 - 38.0 Ma)

• Position within formation unknown. Classic stratigraphic data based on nummulitids, nannoplankton and plankton foraminifer studies indicate a Lutetian and Early Bartonian age for the Szoc Limestone Formation (NP 15-16 zones)

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lithified, massive, shelly/skeletal, gray, yellow limestone

• The lowermost layers with large masses of alveolinids and calcareous algae (Corallinaceae, Dasycladaceae) point to shallow water around 10 m deep. Up section, the algae disappear gradually (first the Dasycladaceae, later the Corallinaceae). Alveolinids also disappear, while nummulitids and discocyclinids become more common. Glauconitic layers at the top-most part of the formation were deposited near the shelf break at around 130 m depth.
• Massive, yellowish grey carbonate with larger foraminifers (mainly Nummulites,

•Operculina, Alveolina, Discocyclina) commonly in rock-forming quantities. Lithified based on fossil preservation.

Size class: macrofossils
