LaFarge Quarry, Bobcaygeon-Verulam contact zone (Ordovician of Canada)

Where: Ontario, Canada (44.5° N, 79.2° W: paleocoordinates 23.9° S, 52.2° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Corynoides americanus graptolite zone, Bobcaygeon-Verulam Formation (Simcoe Group), Katian (453.0 - 445.2 Ma)

• ...specimens were collected from blast piles sourced from stratigraphic intervals containing approximately 15m of upper Bobcaygeon and 5m of lower Verulam... PJW: Corynoides americanus zone spans Bobcaygeon & Verulam.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; lithified, hardground, calcareous wackestone and lithified, hardground, calcareous siltstone

• The paleoenvironments in which the Bobcaygeon and Verulam formations were deposited have been interpreted as a proximal carbonate shelf that ranged in depth and proximity from shoal to shallow shelf in the Bobcaygeon and from deep shelf to shoal/shallow shelf in the Verulam (Armstrong, 2000).
• Both the Bobcaygeon and Verulam formations are comprised of bioclastic wackestones, grainstones, and packstones interbedded with calcareous shales and siltstones. The Verulam contains more shale than the underlying Bobcaygeon Formation (Liberty, 1969). Several hardgrounds have been documented in detail from the upper Bobcaygeon and lower Verulam (Brett and Liddell, 1978; Brett and Brookfield, 1984; Brett and Taylor, 1999).

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

• ...numerous exceptionally preserved crinoid specimens with arms, stems, and attachment structures intact.

Preservation: original calcite
