Cerro Boleadoras (Miocene to of Argentina)

Also known as CB-025

Where: Santa Cruz, Argentina (47.0° S, 71.6° W: paleocoordinates 47.7° S, 66.2° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• hand sample-level geographic resolution

When: Cerro Boleadoras Formation (Río Zeballos Group), Burdigalian to Burdigalian (20.4 - 13.8 Ma)

• They cite FRANCHI, M., MADDEN, R. H., MAZZONI, M. M. & SWISHER, C. C. III. (in press): Stratigraphy and geochronology of the mammal-bearing middle Miocene "Friasian" of Patagonia. Journ. South Amer. Earth Sci.

•The Cerro Boleadoras Formation contains vertebrate fossils that were respectively assigned to the Santacrucian SALMA (lower Miocene) by Carlini et al. (1993) and Vucetich (1994) and to the Friasian SALMA (upper lower to middle Miocene) by Scillato-Yané et al. (1993) (see Fig. 3). Espinoza et al. (2010) obtained four K/Ar ages between ~16 and 14 Ma for the Zeballos Volcanic Sequence in the top of the Río Zeballos Group (see Fig. 3).

•From Vera et al. 2021: the 16.4Ma succession near the base of the Cerro Boleadoras Formation (Folguera et al. 2018) and the 16–14 Ma interval assigned to the Zeballos Volcanic Sequence on the top (Charrier et al. 1979; Espinoza et al. 2010), a Burdigalian–Langhian age for the Cerro Boleadoras fauna could be inferred

•From Vizcaino et al 2022: Based on a U-Pb detrital zircon maxium age, the lower part of the CBF in the Río Jeinemeni area is estimated at ca. 16.5 Ma, i.e. Burdigalian (Folguera et al., 2018; Fig. 2). This is consistent with the recently obtained early Miocene detrital U-Pb ages for the underlying Río Jeinemeni Formation as well as middle-late Miocene for the overlying Río Correntoso Formation (Aramendía, 2021). The fossil-bearing fluvial deposits of the SCF exposed near Lago Posadas (Fig. 1.B, C) are temporally equivalent to the Río Jeinemeni and Cerro Boleadoras formations, with an age constrained between 18 and 14 Ma based on 40Ar/39Ar tuff ages (Blisniuk et al., 2005), tephrochronology (Perkins et al., 2012) and 87Sr/86Sr ages for the underlying marine deposits (Cuitiño et al., 2015, 2019a). Although no radiometric ages are available for the Cerro Boleadoras and Cerro Plomo area, based on facies similarity, the studied stratigraphic interval is assigned to the lower part of the CBF, whose ~16.5 Ma age is extrapolated from that of the Río Jeinemeni area. Facies similarity is also evident with the nearby SCF in Lago Posadas, allowing to hypothesize that the average sedimentation rate value of 114 m/Myr calculated for that area (Blisniuk et al., 2005) could be extrapolated to the 150 m-thick surveyed succession of the lower part of the CBF, which would range between ca. 16.5-15.1 Ma (Fig. 3).

Environment/lithology: fluvial; lithology not reported

• The Cerro Boleadoras Formation is characterized by a succession of medium-grained trough cross-bedded sandstones interbedded with mudstones with incipient pedofeatures (Aramendıa et al. 2019).
