Stowell Park borehole (scissum Beds, 370-389ft) (Jurassic of the United Kingdom)

Where: Gloucestershire, United Kingdom (51.8° N, 1.9° W: paleocoordinates 41.0° N, 8.7° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: scissum Beds Formation (Inferior Oolite Group), Middle Jurassic (174.7 - 161.5 Ma)

• "370ft 1in - 389ft 2in" (Melville 1956)

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: calcareous sandstone

• "The scissum beds are fine-grained calcareous sandstones and sands with calcareous doggers, grey when fresh, golden-yellow when oxidised. The 'pipes' and 'pinnacles' of golden colour noted in the log are due to the differential oxidation of pyrite, not to collapse or any other disturbance of the original bedding. The sands are homogeneous and the bedding-planes are difficult to make out, in contrast to the well-stratified but otherwise similar sands in the Middle Lias" (Green & Melville 1956)

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: mold/impression

Reposited in the BGS

Collection methods: core
