Where: Shasta County, California (40.5° N, 122.5° W: paleocoordinates 41.6° N, 82.6° W)

When: Budden Canyon Formation, Cenomanian (100.5 - 93.9 Ma)

• the lowest beds of the Upper Cretaceous, where the sandy beds of this area overlie unconformably the shales of the later Horsetown group, with a distinct lithological and faunal change.

Environment/lithology: marine; conglomeratic sandstone and concretionary shale

• The beds above the contact are sandy, with a succession of conglomerates, whereas the beds beneath are shales with occasional concretionary layers, many of them stocked with Albian types of Mollusca, as already shown (Anderson, 1938).
