Roadcut and riverbank near Xiaoyang village (Cambrian of China)

Where: Shaanxi, China (32.5° N, 107.1° E: paleocoordinates 28.2° N, 164.5° E)

When: Early/Lower Cambrian (541.0 - 513.0 Ma)

Environment/lithology: shelly/skeletal, gray limestone and silty dolomite

• Here the Ediacaran–Cambrian contact is developed as a disconformity surface in the upper part of the Dengying Formation (Xie, 1988); the Ediacaran blocky dolostones are overlain by 8.4 m of thick intercalated dark grey bioclastic limestones and silty dolostones of the lower Cambrian Xihaoping Member (Fig. 1C). The Xihaoping Member is overlain at another disconformity, by 116 m rocks of the Shuijingtuo Formation, which is subdivided into two informal units. The lower unit, 31 m thick, is composed of dark, thin, silty limestones, while the upper unit is composed of 85 m of siltstones interbedded with thin limestone layers.
