Roadcuts that lead to the municipio de Tubara, W flank of Tubara syncline (Miocene to of Colombia)

Where: Atlántico, Colombia (10.9° N, 75.0° W: paleocoordinates 10.6° N, 73.7° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Tubara Formation, Late/Upper Miocene to Late/Upper Miocene (11.6 - 2.6 Ma)

• Overlying Formation: None. Underlying Formation: Piojo Formation. (Bermudez et al., 2017). Thickness: Anywhere from 150-300 m (Porta 2003; Bermudez et al., 2017).

Environment/lithology: foreshore; gray shale and lithified, gray, yellow sandstone

• Bermudez et al., 2017, say that the crabs found in the Tubara Formation were found at the very top of the column. This section corresponds to the segment C lithofacies in Molinares et al., 2007 and 2012. In Molinares et al., 2012, they say segment C “is interpreted as the product of sedimentation in the transition between foreshore and upper shoreface environments. The foreshore environment is associated with very continuous low-angle plane-parallel bedding (lithofacies C2), whereas the shoreface facies is associated with wave-ripple cross laminated sandstones (lithofacies C3), which changed to cleaner, well-selected and cemented sandstones, in a typical coarsening upward pattern where beds are thicker and more continuous (lithofacies C4).
• The authors (Bermudez et al., 2017) say that the crustaceans in this formation were found within thin to thick fossiliferous dark-gray shale layers, interbedded with thick, cross-bedded, grayish-yellow, lithic sandstone and coquinoid beds (including gastropods, bivalves, cirripedians, polychaete tubes, shark teeth and turtle remains).

Size class: macrofossils
