Didymothyris Community, West Khatanzeya Fm., Novaya Zemlya region (Silurian of Russian Federation)

Where: Russian Federation (71.0° N, 58.0° E: paleocoordinates 4.0° N, 1.5° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• basin-level geographic resolution

When: West Khatanzeya Formation, Ludlow (427.4 - 423.0 Ma)

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; peloidal, shelly/skeletal lime mudstone and dolomitic, peloidal, shelly/skeletal, gray wackestone

• [see lithology] "The Didymothyris were buried in situe with no evidence for sorting or transport (all shells articulated)." "...the Didymothyris Community and ostracode communities occur mainly at the edges of rugosan biostromes and are also found as discrete patches between biostromes."
• "...shallow water, pelletal, skeletal, calcareous muds with ostracodes and algal mates in weakly agitate, quiet water. In stratigraphic sections the community consists of lenticular coquina interbeds and pockets among dark-gray, finely pelletal, skeletal wackestones having a lenticular bed distribution of brachiopod, gastropod, and ostracode. These limestones are locally dolomitized."
